A mother and her two young children have been revealed as the victims of a devastating car crash in Melbourne - metres from the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

The 35-year-old woman was driving her 20-month-old boy and eight-year-old girl when their SUV hit a kerb and crashed into a pole in the Parkville suburb on Friday morning.

Graphic footage taken by bystanders shows the car engulfed in flames on the road, thick plumes of black smoke filling the air.

Eyewitnesses told 7News the car exploded after it hit a power pole.

It’s understood the woman was a mother-of-four and had just dropped off her two other children at school shortly before the tragedy.

Police reportedly visited the father’s workplace to inform him of the devastating news.

“The exact cause of the crash is yet to be determined however police have ruled out it being a terrorism incident,” local police said in a statement.
