A Brazilian man has died after being hit by an exploding beer keg at his own birthday party.

Gilson do Nascimento, 43, died after he was hit in the head by fragments of metal as he tried to fix the keg so beer would come out of the tap.

The party was held in the victim’s family home in the town of Campo Bom, in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, which was attended by his wife, sister, niece and 15-year-old son according to the Metro.

The 43-year-old man - who owned a locksmith business - had gone to fix it at around 6pm on September 17.

He called the company he hired the keg from to get advice on how to fix it according to his niece.

"My uncle called them (the rental company) and they gave him instructions on how to start fixing it until they arrived," the niece told local media. "The beer wasn’t coming out, only foam,’ she said.

Local police are treating the incident as an accident with spokesperson Clovis Nei da Silva saying, "We are interviewing witnesses at the scene at the time of the incident,” da Silva says according to the Metro. "For now, the incident has been registered and an autopsy has been requested.’

The incident has left the victim's family 'very shaken' and comes just six years after he battled cancer – spending two months in an ICU.

His godmother Angela Maria de Oliveira told local media, “He was a warrior, a working man, a wonderful family man,” she says. “He was everything to us and he will be sorely missed in our lives, it was a full house with him, always a full house."
