Tasmanian man killed after firework explodes in metal cylinder

An Australian man has died after a firework he was trying to ignite exploded.

Tasmanian police officers were called a property in Birralee late on Friday night where 100 people had gathered.

A spokesperson for police told 7 News there were fireworks being set off and the incident happened when a man in his 50s attempted to light a cracker using a metal cylinder.

In the blast, the man was struck in the chest and shoulder and died at the scene.

No one else was hurt in the incident, the spokesperson confirmed.

The incident is being treated as non-suspicious and has been referred to the coroner.
