The Australian state of Victoria has broken its daily COVID-19 case record for the second day in a row, officials announcing on Saturday 1965 new cases.

The virus has taken the lives of five more people over 24 hours, bringing the state's death toll to 80 in its current outbreak.

Friday's record 1838 was surpassed after 73,443 tests in 24 hours picked up 1965 cases.

Victoria has seen a climb in case numbers over the week, The Age reporting the state is preparing to fly health workers in from overseas to ease a staffing crisis.

The state's chief health officer Brett Sutton told 7 News on Friday Victoria's outbreak was close to peaking as the state nears a vaccine milestone.

A massive 41,177 Victorians have been inoculated since Friday's update, edging the state's total doses to 4 million.
