COVID-19: Victoria sets record high of 1,838 new cases, five more deaths

The Australian state of Victoria has recorded 1,838 new cases of COVID-19 and five more deaths.

Friday's case numbers broke the record for the state's daily case numbers following a nine-day run of more than 1000 cases.

On Thursday, Victoria reported 1,638 new cases, 1,420 new cases on Wednesday, 1,763 on Tuesday and 1,377 on Monday. 

The 1,883 new COVID-19 cases on Friday were identified from 77,554 test results, bringing the total number of active cases in Victoria to 16,832.

The five deaths overnight have taken the state's death toll in the current outbreak to 75.

36,600 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were administered over the past 24 hours bringing the total of doses administered to 3,818,259. 

Over 84 percent of Victorians have had one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, while more than 55 percent are fully vaccinated.
