A new report claims that Donald Trump was "incredibly close" to nominating his daughter Ivanka to lead the World Bank.

The former head of the World Bank Jim Yung Kim resigned in January 2019, with a replacement to be chosen by the United States.

The Intercept news organisation reported they had been told by two anonymous sources that Trump had almost nominated Ivanka for the role.

"It came incredibly close to happening".

The report claims the appointment was only stopped after treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, who worked with Trump during his four years in the White House, intervened.

The Financial Times had reported back in January 2019 that Ivanka's name was "floating around Washington" regarding the role.

In an interview with Associated Press, Ivanka said her father raised the job as "a question" and she told him she was "happy with the work" she was doing.

David Malpass was instead appointed as the leader of the World Bank.
