Police have arrested two people in Sweden after a shocking incident left one child dead and another one seriously injured.

According to the Expressen tabloid, the children's father stabbed them before throwing them out of the window of their flat in the western Stockholm district of Hasselby on Sunday night.

Police were called to the scene where the two children - both under 10 - were found on the ground outside the building by a member of the public.

The children were taken to the hospital by helicopter, however the youngest child died overnight and the other has life-threatening injuries, Swedish news outlet Aftonbladet reported.

Police believe the children were thrown from a height of about 15 metres.

"We suspect that they have fallen from a great height, from the balcony of an apartment," Swedish police spokeswoman Helena Boström said.

A man and woman - who were known to the children - have been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, police say.

One of those detained was also apparently injured in the incident and was being treated in hospital before being questioned.
