A woman on a flight in America has been arrested after slapping a fellow passenger who refused to wear a mask.

Delta Airlines flight 2790 from Tampa, Florida to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on December 23 was marred by a mid-air "disturbance".

A video posted to Twitter by ATL Uncensored/Atlanta News shows a female passenger, Patricia Cornwall, standing in the aisle asking a flight attendant to make a male passenger "mask up".

The male passenger overhears the requests and says "you got your mask down, bitch".

The flight attendant tries to calm the situation before the two passengers get into a heated exchange.

Cornwall asks "did you call me a bitch?" and the male passenger responds saying "yes I did".

Cornwall then slaps the man across the face and he straight away says "now you're going to jail. That's assault. You're going to jail".

Video contains strong language.

The flight attendant tries to restrain Cornwall but she pushes her off as the male passenger starts calling her a "bitch" and "Karen".

Atlanta police officers were waiting for the flight as it landed to deal with "a disturbance call involving an unruly passenger", officials said in a Christmas Day (local time) press release.

"When the aircraft arrived at the gate, officers were able to meet with exiting passengers who advised that the suspect, Ms Patricia Cornwall had caused a disturbance while in the air," officials said.

"This disturbance (led) to the injury of fellow passengers and Delta employees. Based on the statements gathered and visible evidence, officers detained Ms Cornwall and contacted the on-call FBI agent."

Cornwall was taken to an Atlanta police station and then taken into custody by the FBI, officials said.

Information has not been released on the extent of the injuries to the male passenger.
