Coronavirus: Indian man claims he's had 12 doses of the vaccine, beating Kiwi man's reported record

A New Zealand man who reportedly had 10 jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine has some competition - an Indian man who claims he's had a dozen.

Brahmdeo Mandal, 85, told the New York Times the vaccine has not only stopped him getting COVID-19, but cured many of his other ailments.

"My backache has improved, my general weakness improved, and my appetite improved," he said.

Mandal's claim couldn't be verified, but wouldn't be difficult to pull off - India's vaccine rollout has been plagued by irregularities, and in some areas records are kept manually and uploaded later, meaning vaccinators wouldn't always have access to up-to-date information.

Mandal said every time he was asked if he'd already had a jab, he simply lied.

"I was always looking for new vaccine camps and would go there,” he said. “Nobody would recognise me."

In December, the Ministry of Health said it was investigating reports a Kiwi man got 10 doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine in a single day. It's believed he was getting the jabs on behalf of other people, in order to get fraudulent vaccine passes.

University of Otago health professor Peter McIntyre called it "a dumb thing to do".

"It's a long way past the recommended upper limit, even if you are a big male and although severe side effects are rare, you would increase your chances from rare to a bit less than rare which is not a great thing to do."

A team of investigators is looking into Mandal's claims. Unlike the Kiwi man, Mandal has spaced out his doses. It's not clear which vaccine he's been getting - India has approved several different kinds.

No one's really sure what effects having a dozen doses of any of the vaccines would have. The most anyone in the world has had through official channels is four.
