Excruciating footage has emerged of a driverless Tesla malfunctioning and driving directly into a multi-million-dollar private jet.

Video of the incident, which took place at an event sponsored by aircraft manufacturer Cirrus at Felts Field in Spokane, Washington, was posted to Reddit last week.

The user who posted the video said the owner of the vehicle had used the 'smart summon' feature to get it past the jet.

The smart summon feature enables a Tesla to leave a parking space and navigate obstacles to get to the owner of the vehicle. The feature can be triggered via a smartphone, allowing the owner to summon their car from 60 metres away, as long as it's in your line of sight.

The Reddit user said the jet the Tesla owner crashed into was the most expensive one at the event, with a value of US$3.5 million (NZ$5.3 million).

It's not the first time there have been issues with the feature, with a number of users in 2019 complaining of near-crashes or confused, slow-moving vehicles, according to The Verge.

One user tweeted they tried the feature and it ran into the side of the garage. Another said it caused front bumper damage after crashing into another car at a car park.

The feature has since been updated, allowing Tesla vehicles to be summoned from further away and to navigate more complex parking environments, the Verge reported.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has described the smart summon feature as the company's most viral feature ever.
