New South Wales police have started a manhunt after a teenage boy was allegedly detained and sexually assaulted by a stranger in a bathroom at one of Sydney's biggest train stations.

NSW Police said a 15-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted at Country Concourse at Central Station at about 3pm on Saturday.

"The man allegedly detained the teenager in a toilet and sexually assaulted him before leaving the scene," police said.

Police said the man then boarded a train to Mortdale - which is a suburb about 20km south of the CBD - where he disembarked and left the station.

The 15-year-old boy reported the assault to his mother, who then contacted the police.

Police have now started a manhunt and describe him as being Caucasian in appearance, about 180cm tall and with a solid build. He is believed to be aged between 40 and 50, with a white beard.

Officers said he was seen wearing a black and fluorescent jacket with a black T-shirt, jeans and black sneakers.
