Russian state TV host calls for reinstatement of 'partner' Donald Trump as US President

A Russian state TV host has called on the United States to reinstate former president Donald Trump, vowing to help him get re-elected.

Host of the popular talk show 60 Minutes, Evgeny Popov, made the comments on air where he referred to Trump as Russia's partner.

"It's time for us, for our people, to call on the people of the United States to change the regime in the United States early and to again help our partner Trump to become president," Popov said.

The video has gained widespread attention, with many people outraged that Trump has been referred to as Russia's partner while Russia wreaks havoc in Ukraine.

For over a month, Russia has been bombing Ukraine in a widescale attack that has killed thousands of civilians and caused millions of Ukrainians to flee their country.

US President Joe Biden has condemned Russia for its invasion, introducing numerous sanctions on the country and accusing its president Vladimir Putin of war crimes.

Before the war, Trump referred to Putin as his friend and there have been allegations Russia helped Trump in his previous elections.

Two years ago, the Senate Intelligence Committee released a report confirming an "aggressive" interference by Russia that sought to denigrate opponent Hilary Clinton. The report came from a three-year investigation into Russia's involvement with the 2016 US election where Trump won.

"The Russian government perceived it would benefit from a Trump presidency and worked to secure that outcome, and that the campaign expected it would benefit electorally from information stolen and released through Russian efforts," the report stated.

However, it found that members of the Trump campaign did not coordinate with the Russian government on its election interference.
