A "dangerous" UK bodybuilder has killed a father-of-two in an unprovoked nightclub attack after he accidentally stepped on his foot.

Robert Owen Greenhalgh, 31 - who calls himself the 'hardest c**t in the North West' - punched and killed Robert Smethurst, 36, on September 2 last year.

Earlier in the night before the fatal attack at about 11:40pm, Smethurst had accidentally stepped on Greenhalgh's foot - while celebrating his cousin Aaron Bates's birthday at a nightclub in Bolton - but apologised and there seemed to be no further problems.

About 10 minutes prior to the fatal attack, there was some "innocent" conversation between the two groups but nothing came of it.

Out of the blue, at about 1:30am, Greenhalgh got up - after he had been sitting in a booth at the nightclub - clapped his hands and hit Bates before punching Smethurst with the force of a "heavyweight boxer", the Manchester Crown Court heard.

Bates was able to break his fall but had no memory of the attack while the blow to Smethurst caused immediate brain trauma even before he fell to the ground. He died about an hour after the attack.

After the brutal attack on the pair, Greenhalgh shouted "who else wants some?"

Greenhalgh was later found in a hotel in Leigh - 20 minutes south of the nightclub - where police discovered a syringe containing traces of testosterone and trenbolone, a steroid ordinarily used by vets to increase muscle growth and appetite in livestock, in his work van, the Daily Record reported.

He has been declared "dangerous" and jailed for 15 years after admitting manslaughter following the attack.

"Not for one moment did you consider that which you had done, other than to glory in your achievement and invite others to attack you," sentencing Judge Anthony Cross QC said, as reported by the Daily Record.

Smethurst's wife Amanda labelled Greenhalgh a "coward" and said she can't describe how much she misses her husband.

"I was robbed of my husband, my best friend, my happiness and my future all in one.

"How could someone be so violent and hateful towards my husband who did absolutely nothing to deserve this attack?

"The love for my husband is overwhelming proof of what an incredible man he is. I miss him more than words could ever describe."

Greenhalgh had previously talked about using steroids to bulk up as he regularly visited the gym, while also bragging of his cocaine use. In messages, he claimed to have used over $96,000 of the class A drug in six months, the Record reported.
