Four people have been injured after a humpback whale slammed onto a tourist boat in Mexico, completely flattening the vessel.

On Saturday (local time) in the port of Topolobampo, a group of tourists took a boat out to take a closer look at the large marine mammal when it crashed onto their vessel and injured those onboard.

The eight-metre mammal was a local tourist attraction in the area, Australia's 7 News reported.

Two men and two women were injured and local fishermen dived in to help them and get them out of the water, to receive medical treatment.

7 News reported the owner of the boat was among the injured and he is in a stable condition at a private health centre.

Local authorities have asked tourists before not to go near the whale whilst it is in the harbour.

They are threatening to cancel permits for boat owners who come too close to the marine mammal, 7 News reported.

The local tourism department said in a statement: "For your safety, we ask the maritime community of the port of Topolobampo to take precautions in the waters of the bay to avoid accidents such as the one that occurred this afternoon (Saturday) while the whale visits our shores."
