Oklahoma state representative Mickey Dollens has proposed vasectomies should be mandatory for boys in the state when they reach puberty.

Dollens said the vasectomies would only be reversed if those receiving one are emotionally and financially stable.

Pennlive reported Dollens told a group of Republican Party lawmakers: "If you think that is crazy then I think that maybe you understand how 50 percent of Oklahomans feel, as well."

Dollens proposed this after Oklahoma passed one of the strictest abortion bans, where abortions are banned from fertilisation when the sperm meets the egg, Pennlive reported.

Dollens wrote on Twitter: "To all the angry males, if mandatory vasectomies sound absurd, the idea of government regulating women’s reproduction should too."

Governor Kevin Stitt will sign the abortion ban into law and the only exceptions to the law will be saving the life of the pregnant person or if the pregnancy was a result of rape or incest.

Pennlive reported that Dollens would likely introduce the mandatory vasectomy bill next year.

Many states are changing their abortion laws after a leaked draft from the U.S. Supreme Court, indicated Roe v. Wade would be overturned.

Roe v. Wade was the decision to legalise abortion Nationwide and has been in place since 1973.
