Retired FBI agent says gun control 'not the answer' to prevent school shootings

A retired FBI agent says making US gun laws stricter is "not the answer" to stopping school shootings.

The comments come after one of the deadliest school shootings in Texas on May 24, where an 18-year-old opened fire at Robb Elementary school, killing 19 children and two teachers.

Sky News Australia reported retired FBI agent Greg Shaffer said the focus should not be on gun control but on enhancing security in schools.

"Americans will never give up their weapons so we have to come up with more innovative ideas and one of those is placing better security in those soft targets," he told Sky News Australia.

Shaffer said schools are "soft targets," because their security isn't very strong.

He has suggested, that schools ramp up their security so they are ready if a shooting was to occur.

"Every one of those institutions of education needs to have an armed officer, trained, in those schools."

Shaffer thinks having School Resource Officers will help them have a better chance of defending themselves if a shooting was to occur, Sky News Australia reported.

"We need to make sure those School Resource Officers are in every school in America - grade school, middle school, junior high, high school."

The latest shooting at Robb Elementary is one of the deadliest shootings since a gunman shot and killed, 26 people at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Connecticut in 2012.

CBS News reported that the latest Texas school shooting is the 27th school shooting in 2022.
