Mike Bush, the former New Zealand Commissioner of Police, is out of the running to become the new head of London's metropolitan police service.

It was reported earlier last month Bush had applied for the position, which was vacated when Cressida Dick resigned in February.

Dick's position as the head of Scotland Yard had become untenable after accusations of racism in the police force along with a number badly handled high-profile incidents.

"It is with huge sadness that, following contact with the mayor of London today, it is clear that the mayor no longer has sufficient confidence in my leadership to continue," Dick said.

"He has left me no choice but to step aside as commissioner of the Metropolitan police service."

It was reported last month that Bush, a who headed the police in New Zealand from 2014 to 2020 had applied for the role.

The Guardian reported the candidate field had been cut from five to two, and Bush was no longer under consideration.

The Guardian reported the three applicants were rejected after the hiring panel read their applications.

Mark Rowley, a former head of counter-terrorism, and Nick Ephgrave remain in the hunt for the coveted police role.
