A pregnant woman in Kansas City, Missouri was shot by police five times on Friday evening (local time) after an alleged carjacking.

The officers found the suspects of the alleged carjacking in a parking lot of a Family Dollar store where the driver of the vehicle got out of the car, jumped a fence and ran and the passenger exited the car and began to run away too.

The passenger was identified as pregnant woman Leonna Hale.

A witness who saw the whole interaction told the Kansas City Star that Hale ran three steps before police began shooting at the woman.

"One, two, three, four, five. I remember it because it didn't stop. They shot five times, I remember seeing her hit the ground and I froze," witness Shédanja said.

Shédanja declined to provide her last name to the Kansas City Star but said the woman was unarmed and had her hands up in the air.

"She did not pull out a weapon on them, she did not even have a stick in her hand."

The Kansas City Star said Hale sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

Kansas City Police Department's interim police chief Joesph Mabin told local news: "We never want to be in these types of situations, not the public, as a police department.

"Anytime it happens is a blight on our community. I want to ensure the public the scene is secure."

Kansas City Star reported state troopers are leading the investigation into the shooting.
