A New York City pastor has posted on Instagram that he and his wife were robbed at gunpoint during a sermon on Sunday (local time).

Pastor Lamor Miller-Whitehead was livestreaming a sermon when several men allegedly went into the church armed with guns ready to attack the pastor and his wife.

According to CNN, the New York Police Department received a report that three people entered the church with firearms and removed more than US$1 million (NZ$1.50m) in jewellery from the pastor and his wife.

Whitehead reportedly told local police there were around 20 to 25 congregants there during the robbery.

On an Instagram Live Whitehead said: "When I saw the men armed with the guns, I told everybody just get out."

Whitehead has over 1 million followers on Instagram and is known for his designer outfits and extravagant jewellery.

According to CNN, police said that no one was reported as injured and the investigation is ongoing.
