Three people are dead and another has undergone emergency surgery following a shooting in regional Queensland, Australia - all while the gunman is still on the run.

Queensland Police and other emergency services responded to the shooting at a property in Bogie, between Mackay and Townsville.

Four people were shot, and on Thursday afternoon it was confirmed three of them are dead.

Acting Superintendent Tom Armitt said in a press conference police are actively searching for the gunman.

"And commencing our investigations into what the circumstances were and how it came to be that these people had been shot," he said.

"At this stage, we are at very, very early stages of this investigation. We do not know who is responsible."

The man who fled the scene and was later found by police ran "many, many kilometres from the crime scene" before reporting the incident.

Police declared an emergency exclusion zone earlier on Thursday which will remain in place "as long as we need to do our job" Armitt added.
