Multiple people were injured after a carnival ride in India plummeted to the ground.

On Sunday (local time), a carousel-like ride with around 50 people on it at the Phase 8 amusement park in Punjab's Mohali district malfunctioned and suddenly dropped 50 ft (15.24 metres), injuring 16 of the riders.

According to the Hindustan Times, it is unclear why the ride malfunctioned but carnival organisers have blamed it on a "technical issue."

Footage of the nail-biting drop was shared on Twitter where people from the ride are flung out of their seats, despite being strapped in as it crashes to the ground.

In the social media video, people rushed over to help those who were injured as there were reportedly no ambulances at the carnival.

A witness told the Hindustan Times: "We picked up the injured and rushed to the hospital."

The witness also added the fairground bouncers tried to "threaten" people for intervening and carnival "organisers also fled the scene."

Some of the passengers who were injured were as young as ten years old and were taken to several hospitals in the area to be treated for their injuries.

New York Post reported Mohali police claimed the festival organisers were "negligent," and said it would launch an inquiry into what happened.

"We will hold an inquiry and strict action will be taken against the guilty," Mohali deputy commissioner Amit Talwar said.

The carnival reportedly was supposed to come to an end on Sunday (local time) but has been extended until September 11.
