An elderly man has died after he was attacked by his pet kangaroo in Western Australia.
According to police, the "violent" kangaroo then threatened paramedics who tried to reach the man, who subsequently died from his injuries.
The last fatal attack by a kangaroo was believed to be in New South Wales in 1936 when a man died trying to save his dogs from a fight with a kangaroo.
A police spokesperson told The West Australian that emergency services were called to the scene in Albany on Monday after a family member found the man with serious injuries.
"The kangaroo is believed to be a wild kangaroo that was being kept by the injured man as a pet," police told the outlet.
Police said at the house the kangaroo became "violent" and was shot dead by police because it was preventing the ambulance crew from accessing the injured man.
The man died of his injuries at the scene and his death has been referred to the Coroner.
Albany is the home to the western grey kangaroo that can grow to 70kgs and 7.3 feet.
Kangaroos can be very aggressive and attack people as if they were another kangaroo. This includes pushing or grappling with its forepaws or sitting back and kicking out with its hind legs.
Their powerful limbs and sharp claws make them dangerous, however, attacks on people are rare.
