Four people have died and three others are injured after a shooting in Memphis, Tennessee.

Mayor Jim Strickland said in a press conference he condemned the "senseless murder rampage," The New York Times reported.

Strickland said he was "angry for our citizens who had to shelter in place until this suspect was caught. This is no way for us to live, and it is not acceptable. The people of our city were confronted with the type of violence no one should have to face."

The 19-year-old gunman was placed into custody in Memphis, Tennessee after authorities said he was responsible for "multiple shootings" in the area.

Local police earlier said the suspect, who was "armed and dangerous", was driving around the Memphis area in a grey Toyota SUV and was believed to be livestreaming on Facebook. Joyce Peterson, a reporter for local station Action News 5, said the suspect allegedly carjacked the SUV.

Police identified the suspect as 19-year-old Ezekiel Kelly. As of about 2:30pm on Thursday (NZ time), police said Kelly was in custody.

Reports had been received that Kelly was "recording his actions on Facebook", police said.

Kelly was jailed for attempted murder in 2020 and released earlier this year, local newspaper the Commerical Appeal reported.
