Irish police have named the three young siblings who died following a violent incident at a house in Dublin.

Eighteen-year-old Lisa Cash, and her eight-year-old twin siblings Christy and Chelsea Cawley were seriously injured at a property in the Rossfield estate in Tallaght on Sunday.

The siblings were taken to Children's Health Ireland in Crumlin but later police announced all three had died.

Their mother, in her forties, was also hospitalised but has since been discharged. Her 14-year-old son remains in hospital, where he is being treated for a serious but non-life-threatening injury.

Irish police described the fatal incident as "violent, challenging and traumatic", they added everyone involved is believed to be known to each other.

The Guardian reports police used "less-than-lethal" devices to arrest a man in his early 20s at the scene.

Forensic officers have been at the house where a number of items, including a shoe, a small bag and a black coat were removed.

SkyNews reports the upstairs windows of the house were open and smashed, where bloodstains could be seen on the window frames.

Local councilor Charlie O'Connor, who was at the scene on Sunday, told the Independent the community is in shock after the deaths.

"I don't know how to describe it. I was getting calls from early morning with people bringing it to my attention," O'Connor said.

"There is deep shock. People are really, really upset. Any event like this would cause shock, but the fact that it involved children is a really shocking event for this community."

Members of the community have left flowers at the scene, with one message reading: "Fly high little angels. Our hearts are broken for you all."
