Meghan Markle hugs young teenager in heartfelt moment on Windsor Castle walkabout

The Duchess of Sussex has surprised a stunned teenager with a heartfelt hug during her Windsor Castle walkabout.

The moment came during the shock gathering of Prince Harry, his wife Meghan and Prince William and Princess Catherine, when they paid their respects outside Windsor Castle on Saturday afternoon (local time).

Towards the end of the 40-minute walkabout, where the two couples looked at a sea of floral tributes laid outside the gates of the royal estate in tribute to the late Queen Elizabeth II, the Duchess of Sussex's walks over to a section of the crowd and approaches a young girl.

The pair spoke briefly, and Meghan can be seen reassuring the young teenager by putting her hand on hand on her shoulder.

The girl then said: "Can I have a hug?" and the Duchess was seen nodding, before leaning in and giving her a big hug.

Following the moment, the 14-year-old girl told CNN it was "an amazing moment".

"We were waiting for them to come and she came in and asked my name and how long I was waiting and I asked if she can have a hug, and she hugged me back. It was an amazing moment, I'm still shaking now," the 14-year-old girl told CNN following the hug with the Duchess of Sussex.

The 14-year-old said the reason she wanted to hug Meghan was because "I felt it was the right thing to do".

"Everyone was kind of cheering me on and I guess I felt like I needed to in the way, because I look up to her in someway and it felt like the right thing to do," she said.

The teenager said the reason she felt sorry for Meghan is because of the death of Queen Elizabeth and everything that has gone on with the Royal Family.

"I thought it was quite nice to see William and Kate and Meghan and Harry together. I just wanted to show that she was welcome here (in the UK)," she told CNN.

The gathering of the two couples was described by a royal source as an important show of unity at an incredibly difficult time for the family.

The two couples did not interact much during the 40 minute walkabout near one of the queen's favourite English homes, as they stopped to read messages left among the flowers, and shake hands and chat with the thousands of people lining the Long Walk.

This was the first public appearance the royal couples have made together since the passing of the Queen on Thursday.

The Queen died aged 96 at her home in Balmoral, Buckingham Palace announced on Thursday.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon," the family said. "The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow."
