Moment in Boris Johnson's farewell speech that has AM host speculating he might be 'coming to New Zealand'

Boris Johnson signed off from his role as UK's Prime Minister overnight by giving a typically bombastic speech, but one moment has an AM host speculating.

The hosts were discussing Liz Truss's first speech outside Downing Street before moving on to Johnson's speech.

AM co-host Melissa Chan-Green said Johnson's farewell speech "made me think, is he coming to New Zealand?"

"Let me say that I am now like one of those booster rockets that has fulfilled its function and I will now be gently reentering the atmosphere and splashing down invisibly in some remote and obscure corner of the Pacific," Johnson said in front of the door of Number 10 Downing Street.

He then went on to liken himself to Roman dictator Cincinnatus, sparking speculation he might be planning a political comeback.

"Like Cincinnatus, I am returning to my plough," Johnson said.
