Patrick Gower gets up close with royal swans and London's corgis

Newshub's National Correspondent Patrick Gower is in London for the Queen's funeral - and he's been meeting some royal animals.

The monarch has the right to own any swan in the United Kingdom swimming in open waters, and swans that are unmarked.

David Barber worked as her swan marker for 30 years and now works for King Charles. His job is to count the swans on the River Thames, a role that dates back to the 12th century.

"I would go along and say 'that belong to Her Majesty'. That's one. So then she would own it," he told Gower.

And it's not just swans. Queen Elizabeth had a long history with the corgi dog breed, dating back to 1933 when she was gifted Susan for her 18th birthday. Since then she owned more than 30 corgis throughout her reign, with most direct descendants of Susan.

The corgis themselves have become synonymous with the Queen, frequently appearing with her when out in public or in photographs.

With Londoners bringing out their corgis, Gower met some proud dog owners.

"It's quite clear that these corgis are the most popular dogs in London right now and the most popular breed probably in the world," Gower said.
