A rock climber's brush with death as he came face to face with a black bear has been caught on camera.

Earlier this month, a video was uploaded onto Youtube of a man climbing Mount Futago in Japan when a bear suddenly lunged at him and he had to fight for his life.

In the video, the climber was kicking and screaming to try and stop the bear from attacking him.

The bear lunged at the man a couple of times before retreating back down a different path, with its cub.

According to TMZ, the climber said he knew he was invading the bear's territory but had no choice but to defend himself when the bear attacked.

The climber also said his training in karate and mixed martial arts might have saved his life, TMZ reported.

The video was re-shared on social media thousands of times and people have mixed opinions on whether the bear or the climber was in the wrong.

One person tweeted: "I hope the bear is okay. That's a baby."

Another tweeted: "If you ever see me fighting in the forest with a grizzly bear - help the bear that bitch gon' need it."

"If I boxed a bear on a mountain and lived, I'm going to start walking around at night because clearly I am invincible and God ain't calling me home any time soon might as well abuse the power," a third tweeted.

The Youtube video of the attack has been viewed nearly 900,000 times.
