A man has been arrested in connection to numerous 'gimp' sightings in Somerset, UK.

On Tuesday (local time), the man was arrested after he allegedly approached two teenagers in a gimp suit covered in mud, before he dropped to the floor and rolled about.

Since 2018 a man has terrorised people in the villages of Yatton, Claverham and Cleeve by running up to them in a masked bodysuit and grunting, The Telegraph reported.

The man, known as the 'Somerset Gimp', has approached people on multiple occasions to scare them.

On Tuesday, one of the teenagers who was allegedly approached by the man took photos of him and initially thought he was drunk because of the way he was walking.

The 19-year-old told the BBC they were surprised when he "arched his body and flopped to the ground, without putting his hands out to catch himself". The teenager also added the man was "flopping to the floor, writhing and grunting".

They said the alleged offender has really affected the local community.

"It's not just about the encounter but the effect it has in waves through the community. It's quite gut-wrenching."

Avon and Somerset police were called to the area where the gimp was at around 1:00am (local time), and deployed a dog unit and a search helicopter to try and find him.

A man was later arrested in Cleeve, Somerset on suspicion of causing a public nuisance, The Telegraph reported.

Acting Inspector Lee Kerslake said: "We responded quickly to this report due to its similarity with other previous incidents which have caused significant alarm and distress to members of the public."

Insp Kerslake added although no one has been physically harmed by the alleged offender he has still made the local community concerned.

"We are determined to identify the individual or individuals responsible and stop them."

The Telegraph reported the man was released on bail but will have to stay home between 9:00pm and 6:00am and present to a police officer on request.
