Issei Sagawa, the Japanese man who in 1981 murdered then ate a Dutch student has died.

Sagawa died of pneumonia last month but the news of his death was only made public by the family recently.

Known as the Kobe Cannibal, Sagawa was studying in Paris when lured Ditch student Renee Hartvelt to his apartment and fatally shot her in the neck.

He then spent several days eating parts of her body before trying to dump her body in a park.

He was arrested and confessed his crime to police.

Sagawa was deemed unfit to stand trial and was eventually deported back to Japan, where he was allowed to walk free.

Sagawa was open about his crime and became something of a local celebrity, including writing about it in his biography "In Fog."

He also appeared in pictures next to naked women holding a knife and fork .

In a 2013 interview with Vice he said he looked at pictures of women and thought "they would taste delicious".
