Not all heroes wear capes: Australian father fights off knife-wielding thieves in his undies

Not all heroes wear capes.

In fact, underwear was all an Australian father-of-two needed to fight off a gang of car thieves in Queensland on Monday.

The incident was captured by security camera footage outside his Gold Coast property at about 4:30am.

Locals in the Queensland neighbourhood had a rude awakening after five armed intruders attempted to steal Steve Middleton's car.

The 50-year-old was up early to go fishing on Boxing Day when he heard the thieves rummaging in his garage.

And with only adrenaline and a pair of jocks for armour, he began chasing the five offenders down the street.

"I don't think I had time to call the police so it was just pure instinct," Middleton told Sunrise.

Shortly after, two of the men began attacking Middleton armed with a baseball bat and knife.

He managed to escape with just a minor cut to the hand but said youth crime on the Gold Coast is worsening and it must be addressed.

"We've seen the funny side of it but there is a serious side of it," he said. "Look, it could've been a lot worse so we really have to do something about this - it's quite scary. I could have been well and truly injured in this and what about the next people."

The five men eventually took off in two stolen getaway cars but left empty-handed.

"We haven't heard anything back from police as yet but big credit to them, their response time was amazing," Middleton said.

So too was Middleton's reaction to the traction the video of him has gained online.

"Well, I've got Victoria's Secret ringing me hahaha so I should do alright out of this," he joked.
