A Florida woman has been killed by an alligator after she was dragged into a lake while walking her dog.
The 85-year-old is believed to have been walking along the water's edge of Spanish Lakes Fairways in Fort Pierce before the monstrous alligator pulled her into the water.
The alligator was 10 feet long and 700 pounds (317 kilograms).
"He never surfaced. He stayed down the whole time," alligator trapper Robert Lilly told West Palm Beach news (WPBF).
The alligator involved in the attack was eventually captured after he was found lurking at the bottom of the lake.
"Got a second hook in him and then a hard line in him so we could get him up," Lilly told WPBF.
Authorities from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) are conducting an investigation, along with St Lucie County Sheriff's Office, into the incident that caused the woman's death.
Meanwhile, according to FWC, the likelihood of someone in Florida being attacked by an alligator is roughly one in 3.1 million.
"Over the last 10 years, Florida has averaged eight unprovoked bites per year that are serious enough to require professional medical treatment. The frequency of these serious bites is variable but there has not been a significant trend in the past 10 years," the FWC told WPBF.
Residents in the area told police they had never seen an attack like that before.
