A New Zealand child has been found dead at a resort in Fiji.

Cairo Winitana, 8, was found in a flower garden at Club Wyndham Denarau Island on Thursday evening. It is believed the boy was electrocuted.

A Gofundme page has been set up for the family, who are from New Zealand but live in Sydney. Funds raised will go to supporting the child's parents Amber and Clarke with travel expenses and funeral costs.

"We humbly invite you to offer support for both Amber and Clarke as they navigate through this unimaginable nightmare they are now forced to live with," the page's organiser Glenys Wana wrote.

The page said the boy died in a "tragic accident".

Initial information suggests the child was allegedly electrocuted, Fijian police told local media. However, a post-mortem examination will be carried out to confirm the cause of death.

A New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson told Newshub the department is aware of the death and is providing assistance to the family.

No further details could be provided due to privacy, the spokesperson said.
