A Māori woman says she was shocked and disappointed after a Brisbane pub barred her from entering because of her moko kauae.

Juanita McNamara claims she was discriminated against after three security guards didn't allow her to enter the Irish pub, Finn McCool's, in Fortitude Valley on Saturday night.

"They said no facial tattoos because it is the rules of the venue," McNamara told 9News.

McNamara said in the six years she's had the moko kauae she's never had issues, until Saturday night.

"It was actually embarrassing. I was very disappointed, I was shocked but also I felt quite a feeling of injustice."

A spokesperson for Finn McCool's told 9News they have since apologised to McNamara and are updating its entry policy "to reflect and endorse the business' commitment to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all patrons".

McNamara told 9News she's in "negotiations" with a law firm that she thinks will be suitable for discrimination law.
