US police have revealed the moment they pulled over a speeding car to find the driver attempting to swap seats with his dog.

On May 13, Springfield police say they conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle travelling at 52 miles per hour in a 30-mile zone.

In a Facebook post, they say the driver of the vehicle attempted to switch seats with his dog - all while the officer watched.

"The male party then exited the passenger side of the vehicle and claimed he was not driving."

After pointing the blame at his dog and facing questions about him being intoxicated, Springfield police say the man made a run for it.

"The male party was apprehended quickly within about 20 yards (18 metres) of the vehicle."

In the Facebook post, Springfield police say the man was driving from Las Animas to Pueblo and got lost in Springfield. Police later found the man had two active warrants for his arrest.

The man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs, driving while impaired, driving under suspension, speeding 20-24 miles per hour over the speed limit and resisting arrest.
