A New Zealand tourist has drowned at a resort while on holiday in the Cook Islands.

Cook Islands Police said the 49-year-old woman drowned at Edgewater Resort in Rarotonga on Sunday.

The woman was on holiday with her flatmate who is being supported by police, guests, and the Cook Islands Funeral Service, Cook Island News reported.

"She is receiving support and welfare checks during this unfortunate time as she prepares for her friend's body to return to New Zealand," Edgewater Resort and Spa chief executive Andrew Whittaker told the outlet.

Whittaker said a blessing was held on the beach for the woman, which was attended by resort staff, guests and the local community.

A Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesperson told Newshub consular officials are providing assistance following the death of a New Zealander in the Cook Islands, however, due to privacy reasons no further information could be provided.

It is believed to be Rarotonga's second drowning this year after another Kiwi woman died in January while trying to save her daughter who was being swept out to sea by a strong current.
