Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg could face up to six months in prison after she was accused of disobeying a police order.

Charges against the 20-year-old activist were laid after she refused officers' orders to leave a climate demonstration in the Swedish city of Malmo last month, local newspaper Sydsvenskan reported.

On the day of the protest, Thunberg posted on Instagram saying protesters had blocked a street to stop oil trucks entering the harbour.

"The climate crisis is already a matter of life and death for countless people.

"We chose to not be bystanders and instead physically stop the fossil fuel infrastructure," Thunberg wrote.

The activist has not yet commented on the charges.

Sydsvenskan reported the crime she is charged with usually resulted in a fine but the maximum penalty was six months behind bars.

She'll reportedly front a trial at the end of this month.
