Detainees are believed to have jumped out of a burning building to escape a fire at an Australian detention centre that is home to 501 deportees.

Emergency crews raced to Villawood Immigration Detention Centre on Thursday after reports of black smoke billowing in the sky.

According to Sky News, about five inmates were forced to throw their mattresses out of windows before jumping from the second floor to escape the flames.

At least 12 first responders and some detainees are suffering from smoke inhalation.

The fire has since been extinguished, however, the cause of the blaze is currently unknown.

Villawood Immigration Detention Centre houses a mix of asylum seekers, people who have overstayed their visas and Section 501 detainees, commonly known as 501s, who have had their visas cancelled following criminal convictions and are awaiting deportation after serving prison sentences.
