Two people are dead following a mid-air plane collision north of Brisbane.

On Friday morning, two light aircraft collided and crashed at Caboolture Airfield.

7News reported two occupants on the same plane, a man and a woman in their 60s, died after their aircraft crashed heavily into the ground.

Footage captured by 7News shows a large emergency operation at the site of the wreckage.

It's reported the other plane involved landed safely. The occupant, a man in his 70s, reportedly had no injuries.

Details are slim on what caused the crash, though officials have confirmed the planes collided in the air.

7News reported the collision occurred at a low altitude at the eastern end of the airstrip, which reportedly indicates both planes were taking off or landing at the same time.

Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) spokesman Matthew Davis told 7News the sight of the crash was "incredibly confronting" and "extremely traumatic" for paramedic staff.

"Unfortunately, the aircraft had sustained significant impact damage and, unfortunately, when we assessed both those occupants, they were deceased at the scene," Davis said.

"Our hearts certainly go out to [their] family."
