A giant question mark has been spotted in space through the James Webb Telescope, and it has scientists searching for answers.

The team operating the telescope at the European Space Agency released a detailed image of two actively forming young stars located some 1470 light years from Earth.

The two stars were seen surrounded by a disk of material that "feeds" them as they continue to grow for millions of years.

However, below the stars in the busy background was an object that resembled a huge red question mark.

It remains a mystery what the unusual object could be, and according to representatives "this may be the first time we've seen this particular object."

"Additional follow-up would be required to figure out what it is with any certainty."

An assistant professor of physics at Illinois State University, Matt Caplan, told Space.com the mysterious object could be two galaxies merging.

"The two distinct features could easily be merging galaxies in the background, with the upper part of the question mark being part of a larger galaxy getting tidally disrupted," Caplan said.

"Objects with curvy tails extending away from them are very typical."
