An Irish woman in France for the Rugby World Cup has been allegedly abducted and gang-raped by three men overnight.

French media reported the 37-year-old was attacked while in Bordeaux to watch Ireland's win over Romania in their opening match, and was found by Welsh fans.

French police are "actively seeking" three men alleged to be involved.

The situation unfolded late on Saturday night (French time) on Rue de la Rousselle in central Bordeaux, near the woman's accommodation.

She had been walking nearby, when three men allegedly dragged her into an alleyway and raped her.

Neighbours alerted police but the suspects fled.

French media reported police found the woman in a "traumatised and prostrate" state in her apartment.

Irish police, who were in France helping with World Cup security, assisted the woman.

The Irish force in France is "liaising with local authorities in relation to an alleged incident" it said in a statement.

She was eventually transported to Bordeaux University Hospital, and later filed a police report on Monday morning (French time).

French prosecutors are seeking three white men - describing one of them as "very athletic".

"The investigations are underway and in particular the genetic examinations on the victim and the clothing, the collection of testimonies and the study of the video protection [of the area]," local police told Le Parisien.
