Dozens of backpackers forced to evacuate hostel after electric bike explodes in Sydney

A pair of backpackers have narrowly avoided serious injuries after an electric bike exploded at a Sydney hostel.

About 70 people were forced to evacuate from the Mad Monkey on Darlinghurst Rd, Potts Point, after the explosion on Wednesday morning.

Footage released by Fire and Rescue New South Wales shows the exact moment the explosion happened.

Backpackers seen in the video tried to extinguish the fire before fleeing the building, 7 News reported.

Philippe and Hugo, who did not provide their last names, are seen on CCTV in the hallway outside the room moments before the explosion.

One of the men was taken to St Vincent’s Hospital with minor burns to his leg.

E-bike battery suspected cause

Fire and Rescue New South Wales told 7 News the fire was likely caused by a faulty e-bike battery left on charge.

Supt Grant Rice said lithium batteries are the fastest growing fire risk.

"Make sure you are charging them appropriately and using correct charges," he said.

Six fire trucks and 22 firefighters were called on to tackle the blaze.

Investigations are ongoing.
