A 25-year-old French backpacker has died after being bitten by a venomous brown snake, in Malee, a small town in Australia.

Emergency services were called out to the Nullawil property on October 25, and he was flown to the Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, news.com.au reported.

He suffered cardiac arrest and was in critical condition when his life support was turned off two days later.

Speaking to ABC News, Wade Humphreys, who owns the Access Grains site where the man worked said that his death was a "real tragedy," but it was unclear when he was bitten.

A spokesman for WorkSafe Australia told news.com.au they are aware of the man's death, and will determine if further action is needed after they have investigated.

The French embassy has been made aware of the fatality, but would not make any further comment.

The man was working as a causal grain harvester at the time. A position that includes harvesting and sampling grain.

Brown snakes are considered the world's deadliest snake and account for the most snake-related deaths in Australia.
