An industrial sorting robot has crushed a man to death in South Korea after mistaking him for a box of fresh produce.

The accident happened at a pepper-sorting and distribution centre in South Gyeongsangnam.

According to local police, the victim worked at the company who built the robot and he was at the pepper factory to fix a problem with its sensor on Wednesday night.

He was taken to hospital but later died of his injuries.

The robot had been packing boxes of peppers onto a pallet when its arm caught the worker.

It then slammed him onto the conveyor belt, crushing his face and chest, according to South Korea's Yonhap News Agency.

A spokesperson for the plant's owners said in a statement the company wanted to set up a "precise and safe" system.

It comes after a similar accident in March where a robot trapped and seriously injured a man at a car manufacturer.

Industrial robots have been widely used for decades in routine and repetitive tasks like sorting and assembly.

Four out of five robot-caused accidents happen during routine maintenance.
