New details surface around alleged murder of 85yo Australian great-grandmother

New details have surfaced surrounding the death of an 85-year-old great-grandmother in South Australia over the weekend.

Maria Dimasi was found dead at a property on Findon's Thornton Street in Adelaide at about 11:20 on Saturday night.

Her husband Frank Dimasi, 91, was later arrested and charged with Maria's alleged murder.

Police said Frank had called them himself and was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, 7News reported.

Officers arrived just six minutes later to find him sitting at the kitchen table with "blood on his clothing, arms and hands" and a kitchen-style knife nearby.

"He said he was sorry that he killed his wife and that she deserved it," the police prosecutor said.

Maria had suffered "significant wounds to the head, upper body and legs" and paramedics pronounced her death at 11:31pm that night.

The Dimasi family have since released a statement describing her as "caring" and a "wonderful woman" who was "loved by many".

"We will always remember Maria for her warmth, caring nature, compassion and her beautiful smile," they wrote.

The family admitted the past few days have been difficult as they try to process the grief.

"Maria was the centre of our family, bringing us together to care for and support each other. Family was everything to Maria and she was everything to her family".

The Adelaide community have shared their devastation through Facebook posts remembering her as a woman who provided meals to the elderly, with one saying "what a disastrous thing to happen to such a sweet, kind, caring soul".

"Very sad loss for our community, such horrific news this morning," another said.

One man who said he'd worked with her, described her as a "beautiful generous lady".
