Tourists fall off gondola into Venice canal after refusing to sit down, stop taking selfies

Tourists on a gondola in Venice have plunged into canal water after refusing to sit down and stop taking selfies.

A viral video uploaded to TikTok shows the moment the Chinese tourists fell into the cold, filthy water.

Ignoring the orders to sit down, the tourists continued standing on one side of the vessel, causing it to capsize and throw everyone onboard into the water, including the gondolier, according to local media reports.

The video shows the scared expressions of the tourists, dressed in heavy layers, struggling to hold on to the capsized gondola.

One woman can be seen still holding onto her phone tightly, as she attempts to lift herself inside a neighboring gondola, using her one free hand.

Several people on TikTok shared their frustration at the tourists' behaviour.

"They were told not to stand but they chose to ignore the instructions," one woman said.

"Can imagine them panicking and trying to clamber up another gondola causing another capsize," a man wrote.

Others commented about the woman holding her phone tightly.

"And she made sure her phone is saved," one TikTok user commented.

"Trying to save her phone first... priorities these days," another said.

"They are struggling, yet still holding their mobile phone," a third added.

"Unforgettable holiday," another joked.
