A New Zealand tourist is reportedly being questioned after the death of his Thai girlfriend while the couple were staying in Phuket.

The 40-year-old New Zealand man, referred to as Mr Hamish, is believed to be speaking to police after his girlfriend Mrs Chatchaya died last week.

According to local media, Hamish was seen by witnesses verbally arguing with his girlfriend near the rooftop swimming pool of their hotel near Patong Beach on January 6.

Eyewitnesses then reportedly saw the New Zealander carrying his unconscious girlfriend down from the pool area while asking hotel staff to call an ambulance.

Chatchaya was rushed to Patong Hospital where 30 minutes later she was pronounced dead. The cause of her death is not yet known.

Phuket Provincial Police have launched a preliminary investigation into the woman's death with the swimming pool area and the room Hamish stayed in sealed off, the Phuket Express reported.

The news outlet said officers are speaking with hotel workers as part of the investigation, as well as interviewing Hamish.

Hamish has been cooperating with police and has not been formally charged with any crime, the news outlet added.

A spokesperson from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (MFAT) told Newshub the department was aware of the reports.
