The mother of a New Zealand woman caught up in a mass shooting in Kansas City in the US says she was "shaking" but unharmed after the ordeal.

Fungai Mabonga, from Ōtautau in Murihiku/Southland told Newshub her daughter Atipa is "uninjured and safe and we are grateful."

It comes after one person was killed, and 22 others wounded during a victory rally for the Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday. The Chiefs had just won the annual Super Bowl earlier this week.

Officials said three people have since been arrested.

"Our prayers go out to all those affected," Fungai said.

Atipa is an employee of the Chiefs, consistently one of the top football teams in the US.

She was with the team when the shooting took place near the historic Union Station building downtown.

Atipa called her mother this morning, saying she was safe at the Kansas City Chiefs headquarters at Arrowhead Stadium.

According to Stuff, Atipa is a talented track athlete and originally travelled to the US on a scholarship, before taking up a job with the Chiefs three years ago.
