The father of a teenager who allegedly lunged at and stabbed a bishop during a livestreamed church service in Sydney on Monday says he "did not see signs" his 16-year-old son was radicalised.

The attack on Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel at Christ The Good Shepherd Church in Wakeley is being treated as a "terrorist act".

The teenager was known to police - 7News says in relation to knife crime - but was not on any terror watchlist.

"He wasn't known to us from a terrorism point of view, he was not on any terror watchlist... This is the first time this individual has come to our attention in this manner," NSW Commissioner Karen Webb said on Tuesday.

She is speaking with Australia's counterterrorism team about the stabbing.

Meanwhile, the boy's family has moved out of their home amid intense media interest and threats.

Lebanese Muslim Association secretary Gamel Kheir has met with the boy's father following the incident.

He told 7 News the dad was "distraught" and "too scared to go home".

"Did he see the signs? He said no," Kheir said.

"All he saw was a troublesome teenager who wasn't listening to his father.

"You would never have seen a more humble, simple father than... the boys' father."

Police are looking into if the teenager was encouraged to carry out the attack.

The boy remains in hospital under police guard. It's understood he injured his hand in the stabbing. Online rumours suggest he had fingeres "chopped off" in a scuffle but this hasn't been confirmed.
