A man with a sword has been arrested after an attack in London on Tuesday which has left several people injured.

In a statement, the Metropolitan police said: "Police and other emergency services are in Hainault, east London, at a serious incident in which a man with a sword has been arrested."

"We were called shortly before 7am to reports of a vehicle being driven into a house in the Thurlow Gardens area. There were reports people have been stabbed.

"At this time we understand the suspect went on to attack other members of the public and two police officers. We are awaiting an update on the condition of those injured."

A 36-year-old was arrested at the scene, and five people have been taken to hospital.

Police added the incident did not appear to be terror-related and officers were not looking for other suspects.

The Mayor of London Sadiq Khan has released a statement following the attacks, stating he is "absolutely devastated".

Footage shared to X shows a man holding a large sword and swinging it around, while emergency services surround a property.

The man, wearing a bright yellow jumper, appears to be crouching outside people's windows and hiding behind a rubbish bin in one of the videos.

A witness said there appeared to be a stand-off between the suspect and police in an alleyway before he heard a scream.

The man told Sky News: "From that commotion, at least one person was knifed - I think it might have been a woman because I heard a woman scream and then some sort of sobbing sounds.

"I then heard a voice say something like 'she's been stabbed in the face' or 'we need assistance' - you know, calling for medical back-up."

Hainault London Underground station has been closed and local buses are being diverted.
